Emergency Medicine

South Shore Hospital is the leading provider of emergency, acute and outpatient care to the residents of Southeastern Massachusetts and a Level II Trauma Center. Boston Children’s Hospital and South Shore Hospital have been collaborating for over a decade to deliver high quality pediatric care to South Shore families.

The pediatric emergency room at South Shore Hospital is staffed 24-7 by an excellent system of pediatric-specific services such as Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurses (CPEN) and child life specialists to support our board-certified pediatricians and pediatric emergency physicians. Our pediatric emergency volume is over 25,000 per year and has immediate access to a 16-bed pediatric inpatient unit, a level III NICU and 24-7 pediatric respiratory services. We have direct access to leading Boston Children’s subspecialists as well as critical care transport teams for the sickest of patients.

The Pediatric Acute Care Fellowship is comprised of clinical shifts and electives relevant to pediatric acute care. Components of the fellowship include weekly conferences at Boston Children’s main campus, procedure workshops throughout the year at South Shore Hospital led by our faculty, and rotations with our subspecialists.

Proposed rotations (these are subject to change):

• Core ED: 32 weeks
• Orthopedics, sport injuries, concussion: 2 weeks
• Sedation: 2 weeks
• Procedures: 4 weeks
• Toxicology: 1 week
• Burn medicine: 1 week
• Dental: 2 weeks
• Critical transport team: 1 week
• Opthalmology: 1 week
• BCH ED: 1 week
• Psychiatry: 1 week
• Vacation: 4 weeks

Didactics throughout the year:

• Monthly radiology lunch case and didactic conference
• Weekly conferences at BCH main campus
• Network procedure and didactic conferences twice a year

This is a clinical fellowship, without a research requirement. However, scholarly activity and inquiry is always encouraged, and research will be supported if the fellow so desires. We expect to train fellows who will be leaders in the emerging field of acute care pediatrics and as such, it is encouraged that a fellow considers a QI project relevant to this.

The fellow will attend fellowship conferences throughout the year at the main ED alongside the PEM fellows which include core lectures, case presentations, guest lecturers and x-ray reviews.

CME fund is covered in the fellow benefits and fellows are highly encouraged to attend the division of pediatric emergency medicine’s CME course which takes place in the fall. Additionally, the fellow will be encouraged to take part in scholarly activity such as presenting a webinar with the SPUC or a poster presentation at conference of choice.

This fellowship is best suited to recent pediatric residency graduates looking to start a career in acute care pediatrics.

Minimum requirements:

1. Candidate must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in pediatrics
2. Candidate must be board eligible/certified.
3. Candidate must be able to obtain a Massachusetts medical license.
